This plan does not serve a public purpose. Stop supporting special interest and consider the future of our state.Īs a taxpayer from a rural area of Iowa I am strongly opposed to utilizing public tax dollars to fund private schools when the entity receiving funds is not accountable to the same standards and regulations as our public schools. They cant choose a private school so if you are looking for freedom for all, you are barking up the wrong tree. And actually now that I think about it special Ed and our refugee population doesnt have true choice. Every private school I know of offers scholarships which means they are doing just fine. Families still have the right to send their children where they want to. As a state we should be making a great option for all kids not giving money to organizations that will not serve many Iowans. There are no private schools anywhere close to where these children live. They also arent accepted at private schools. Many of my childrens peers do not speak English as a first language. No private schools accept special education children. Many of my childrens peers have special needs. While our family cannot afford private schools that is not the only barrier. The future of Iowa public schools is their future and right now, that terrifies me. I am a mom of 6th grader, 3rd grader, and preschooler in public schools. These vouchers would be incredibly detrimental to our states future our children. Parents should be able to send their children to private schools if they do choose but those schools shouldnt be funded by government money if they arent also being held accountable by the same government for providing a standard of care and education for ALL students with varying needs and abilities. Private schools do not have to do this nor is there any government oversight or accountability for how or what they teach. Also, public schools are responsible to tailor education for all students, providing different learning strategies and opportunities to meet the unique needs of students. They need MORE resources to meet the needs of all students, not less. ![]() ![]() ![]() My parents were both public school teachers, many family members are still working in the public schools. Iowa was regarded as one of the best states for a public education and unfortunately due to continual cuts in budgets, we are not any more.
